This auction is for a 2008 Volvo C30 T5 R-Design 2-door hatchback finished in Passion Red with the two-tone Creme and Off-Black leather interior. I’ve had this Volvo stored indoors for the last 5 years and brought it out of storage in February. Since then it’s had over $3,000 worth of maintenance including a new timing belt and water pump, details of which are further down in the description. This Volvo looks as clean as a four year old vehicle because it was taken off the road when it was 4 years old.
The C30 is powered by a 227 horsepower 2.5 liter turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 20-valve 5 cylinder engine that has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, good economy and inherent smoothness. Code named B5254T7, this engine evolved from the power plant first used in Volvo’s 850 model, and which has gained a reputation for durability and longevity. It features an aluminum block and cylinder head for light weight and excellent heat dissipation, dual overhead cams with Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for maximum power output at all engine speeds, an integral exhaust driven Borg-Warner K04 turbocharger to eliminate turbo lag along with an intercooler for a dense intake charge, Bosch ME 9.0 multi-port fuel injection for good gas mileage, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. This engine has a light pressure turbo, and as such, only requires regular gas. Most turbocharged cars from other makes require more expensive premium fuel.
The engine is mated to an Aisin AW55-50/51SN 5-speed automatic transmission with Geartronic® Manual Shift Mode. This transaxle setup has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration when starting off, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and good fuel economy. The transmission is operated like a conventional automatic transmission for most driving situations but you can also change gears similar to a manual transmission during performance oriented driving maneuvers. To use this feature, you move the shift lever from D (DRIVE) position to the right into the M (MANUAL MODE). In the M position, you press the shift lever forward to upshift or rearward to downshift and the transmission will remain in the gear selected. This is most often used for spirited driving and improved control on winding roads, hilly terrain and during overtaking to keep the engine in its power band and for engine braking when descending steep grades. A display in the instrument cluster tells you what gear you are in from 1 to 5. When coming to a stop, the transmission will automatically shift to 1 (FIRST) gear.
Complementing the C30’s drivetrain are large brakes and a sport tuned suspension system made to smooth out the bumpiest streets and carve up twisting roads. Begin with a rigid chassis and unit body construction for a stiff foundation and add in a four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and coil springs in the rear as well as anti-roll bars all around. Add speed sensitive electro-hydraulic rack and pinion steering and low profile high performance tires for precise handling. For secure braking there are 4 wheel discs with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) that can sense panic stopping and automatically apply all available power brake boost instantly to potentially reduce stopping distances. At a rather light curb weight of around 3,200 pounds and with 227 HP on tap, the C30 accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds, so it goes without saying that it is one of the most fun cars to drive in it’s class, and that it’s quicker, faster and handles better than many other pseudo-sports cars costing thousands more.
The C30 was introduced in the USA for the 2008 model year as a near-luxury compact coupe. It’s styling was meant to evoke the lines of the Volvo P1800 from the 1960’s and 70’. The C30’s exterior style is very unique, combining corporate Volvo design up front with a frameless glass hatchback at the rear. From its sleek lines and sweeping curves incorporating elements from premium European sports cars, it looks handsome from any angle without being flashy. It carries the familiar Volvo styling theme from the C70/S40/V50 when viewed head-on, but that’s where the similarities end. Starting up front, it has both fenders set down just slightly from the hood for aerodynamic efficiency, along with a curved short front bumper housing an upper honeycomb grille with the traditional VOLVO emblem. Below that is a secondary air intake grille flanked on both sides with matching aerodynamic slats and round fog lights. Above the fogs there are clear lens projector beam headlights. Next, a steeply raked windshield and slab-side doors flow along the sides of the car with body colored door handles and wheel-opening moldings for a monochromatic look and brushed aluminum mirrors incorporating chic euro style secondary turn signal lights. On the roof a low profile shark fin antenna adds another euro touch, and the large rear air deflector aids aerodynamic airflow. Then, at the rear, the large glass hatchback affords increased visibility for the driver as well as adding styling interest, and is surrounded by large bumper to roof tail lights that provide more visibility to following cars. Below the rear bumper, a diffuser panel accents the twin 3.50” stainless steel exhaust tips. The short nose and step-down fenders along with flat sides and an angled hatch give the car a bold aggressive stance.
The exterior is beautiful to look at, but if you like high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. The Swedish are known for contemporary style. Think Ikea®. Open the door, step inside and sit down into a power 8-way sport bucket seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for height adjustment, recline and lumbar support. Check out how supportive the side bolsters are and how comfortable the soft supple leather upholstery feels. Then, grab the thick perforated leather wrapped steering wheel and adjust the tilt and telescoping position to achieve complete driving control. Next, look ahead at the dashboard and instrument cluster with the large easy to read blue-face tachometer and 160 mph speedometer, and if its nighttime, turn on the lights and notice how all the switches in the doors and the dash are illuminated. Notice the brushed aluminum accents on the steering wheel and shifter and the R-Design specific Carbon Aluminum trim on the door panels as well as on the center console and how the “waterfall” design of the center dash flows down into the console. As one automotive journalist wrote, “The museum of modern art doesn’t have anything as stylish as the center stack on the new C30.” Not only is the styling chic, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the design of the race car inspired steering wheel, the graining pattern on the dash, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the console, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car.
Now turn on the engine and feel how smooth it idles with a familiar burble that all 5-cylinder Volvos are known for. Next, take it for a spin. Notice how tight the suspension feels going around corners and how secure the brakes are coming to a stop. Now accelerate hard and enjoy the power as the turbo pins you back in your seat without any lag and how the torque is transferred to the pavement without any wheel slip. So whether on congested city streets, open highways, or winding mountain roads, you will be amazed how smooth, quick and confidently this C30 drives. The C30 is a low production hatchback that you don’t see every day, and the R-Design version, of which only 400 were made, pretty much guaranties exclusivity.

The car is in beautiful condition inside and out. The Passion Red paint just about glows in the sunlight and the car looks absolutely fantastic in this color. If you are going to spend this much on a vehicle, you should get the hottest color they come in, you shouldn’t have to settle on just any color that comes along. Sure, black or blue are nice, green is interesting, and white and silver are O.K. if a bit bland, but only this shade of red really catches everyone’s eye. Remember, as you step out of your home every day, and as you set eyes on your car, nothing but a Passion Red C30 will get you feeling as excited about your day ahead. You’ll probably be driving this car for a few years, so just ask yourself, would you rather wake up every morning to a Passion Red C30, or just some other color you “settled” for. It has a very nice body with just a shallow dent on the right quarter panel that you would probably miss if it wasn’t pointed out, and the front bumper air dam has a few cracks that are just visible from underneath. None of these blemishes stand out and are no more than what you would normally expect on a car of this age and mileage. The paint itself is excellent and has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner/polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. Even both the front and also the backsides of the wheels have been cleaned and waxed! How obsessed is that? Ditto for the stainless steel exhaust tips. The wheels have some curb scratches and/or clearcoat discoloration mostly on the right front. The headlights were detailed with the 3M headlight polishing system for a crystal clear look. All the glass, moldings, trim and emblems are very nice. I checked the car out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked. In fact, it still has the original VIN stickers on all the sheet metal. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a two or three year old or 30,000 mile vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a hood or fender to be replaced, let alone a car with over 100,000 miles.

The interior is beautiful as well. It has very nice upholstery, headliner, carpet, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of age. Just the driver’s seat bottom has a few scuffs. Included are a like new set of factory carpeted floor mats. The rear seat doesn’t appear to have ever been sat in. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of.
Mechanically it runs and drives great. The engine and transmission pull strong and feel smooth both at idle and throughout the cruising range. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. It has a matching set of four ultra-high performance Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires size P215/45R18 with good to very good tread all around. These tires have an M+S rated ultra high performance tread design and a cutting-edge appearance with excellent handling, traction and control on dry and wet roads, as well as in snow, while providing a comfortable ride and long life. They have the highest “A” rating for traction and temperature and with an excellent 540 treadwear rating, they should easily go another 25,000 to 30,000 miles before needing replacement. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights. It has a Pirelli spare tire which doesn’t look like it’s ever been used. Everything works on the car like it should except one remote doesn’t function although it still will start the car and its key blade will unlock the doors, and the fog lights stay on when you turn the high beams on. If your state inspection has a problem with that you can either have the module flashed at a Volvo dealer or remove the lights temporarily.
The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $3,000 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Volvo or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Other than routine oil and filter changes, with all the above mentioned servicing the car has recently received, you should be good to go for another 100,000 miles before requiring major maintenance.
If you are serious about buying a Volvo C30 in general, and an R-Design model specifically, this is about as low as they go in this nice condition. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this car you won’t have to spend $1,000 on a timing belt and water pump change, you won’t have to spend $600 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake flush, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service, and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, Craigslist or on dealers lots, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery.

If you are looking for a C30 R-Design in beautiful condition at a good price, then this one is hard to beat. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.”
TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this vehicle may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. I have tried to accurately describe this vehicle, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle.
