About the coins:
Steel Cents are a variation of the classic Lincoln Wheat Cent minted only in 1943. Like the name suggests, Steel cents are made from steel instead of copper or zinc. During WW2, The US Mint reallocated all available copper to be used for ammunition, and opted to use the cheaper, and more abundant steel to mint the one-cent pieces. In 1944 the mint resumed production of copper and zinc wheat cents, but the steel cents were not forgotten by collectors who prize the historic pieces, and often endeavor to find the rare errors of the set, especially 1944 steel cents which are minted after the discontinuation of the coin.
Wheat Pennies were minted from 1909-1958. The design on the Lincoln cent has had the same obverse design, the bust of Abraham Lincoln, since its debut in 1909, making it one of the longest running coin types in America. The wheat design has not been minted since 1958, contributing to the scarcity and value of the coin, but due to the long mintage, they are one of the most fun and easiest to collect!
